INTERVIEW: Bianca Ryder, Bianca Ryder Art

B Ryder

Living in Melbourne we are blessed with arguably the best art scene in Australia. From street art to galleries to home-based artists, wherever you live you aren’t far from being able to pick up a piece of artwork that expresses your feelings, values, and style to showcase in your environment.

Bianca is a Melbourne based artist, located in the beautiful suburbs of Bayside. She has been painting since she was a little girl and is a lover of all things bright and colourful, resulting in incredible abstract paintings with each stroke building a storyline.

We caught up with Bianca and asked her what inspired her to start painting, how the digital landscape has changed the way artists create and share their work, how to choose artwork to best style your home, and why she loves being a Bayside based artist!

1. What inspired you to first pick up a paint brush? Were you always drawn to painting?

I've always been a creative person since I could remember, but I definitely got my artistic side from my mum. She would always encourage me to express my creative flair through painting and drawing. A lot of the things I have learnt to date is because of her, we often spent many afternoons after school painting the objects in our garden. I really developed my love for painting during my later years at high school, especially abstract art. I remember spending hours and hours working on a particular abstract piece of a self-portrait in year 12, which really allowed me to explore my creativity and express myself in a different way. My favourite part of painting, particularly abstract, is the level of detail that goes into each painting, as each stroke builds to the storyline.

2. You have such a unique and vibrant style; how did you develop your personal style? Has your style and the way you paint shifted and evolved over time?

Since starting painting at a young age, my personal style has grown as I was introduced to new mediums and different techniques. Wanting to develop my style, I started to shift from a realism approach of portraiture and saw the opportunity to expand my ideas towards abstract. Abstract painting gives me the freedom of exploring different compositions using the key visuals of shape, form, colour and line. The love for abstract painting allowed me to truly express myself through colour and shape, while using unique techniques to execute my style.

3. Your Instagram community is growing every day, do you think social media has changed the way artists create and share their work?

Definitely! As an evolving artist, I’ve been able to see this firsthand. Social media has not only helped make this process easier, but has allowed me to connect with a growing community of beautiful people. It’s completely humbling that there is a community of people who love my paintings and believe in what I do. All the long hours and hard work that goes into creating the perfect piece, makes it all worthwhile.

4. Where do you find inspiration for your paintings?

I find inspiration everywhere! I am forever taking pictures wherever I go, especially throughout the Bayside area of all the beautiful natural landscapes, such as the beach, trees, birds, and flowers. My latest collection is inspired by water; particularly by all the different hues that form when light reflects it. I love exploring new places; you never know when inspiration will strike!

5. We see art showcased in so many homes, and for some, choosing art can be a difficult decision. Do you have any tips for people who want to add art to their homes but are not sure where to start or how to choose the right piece for them?

The best tip is to look at your home as a whole, rather than looking at a certain area to suit your specific decor. You should fall in love with your new painting by itself first, then everything will fall into place. Trusting your heart is always the best thing to do!

6. Being based in the Bayside area, do you have any go-to cafes or local foodie and businesses you would recommend people go and visit?

I love being local to Bayside, there’s so much to see and do! In terms of food, I love following up my morning walks along the beach with a smoothie or acai bowl at Soul Press in Edithvale. My absolute favourite spot for dinner is Bang Bang in Mordialloc, with a special mention to Ok Billy Souvlaki Bar. For Sunday sips, I love heading to True South in Black Rock, which also has amazing food in a great location.  For all your beauty needs, I couldn’t recommend the girls at Zuri Beauty in Parkdale enough; they’re amazing and will make you feel a million bucks!
